Until the time when Detroit Film Theatre reopens its doors and helps restore the pleasure of experiencing great films together, DFT audiences can still have a ticket to the opening weekend of the world’s best international film releases. We'll premiere a new DFT @ Home selection every week, with simple options for streaming at home and participating in special online events. Every admission will contribute support to the DIA and the tradition of presenting the art of cinema in a historic showcase.
New this Week!
April 6–19 | The Whistlers (Romania/France 2019 – directed by Corneliu Porumboiu)
In this twisty and unpredictable crime thriller from the director of Police, Adjective, a corrupt cop named Cristi travels to the Canary Islands to collaborate with mobsters on a heist that could net millions in cash. To keep their nefarious doings secret, Cristi is educated by a femme fatale to communicate with the gangsters in an indigenous “whistling language,” unintelligible to the police because of its resemblance to bird calls. Double-crosses, romance, suspense, scenery and intrigue combine with unique linguistic showmanship to keep this deadpan-funny, noirish caper movie surprising, right up until the lyrical final moments. A Toronto and New York Film Festival hit, The Whistlers went unseen at the DFT due to the coronavirus emergency but is now available for you to view at home. Continuing for a final week is Sorry We Missed You, the deeply engaging and startlingly relevant drama from award-winning British director Ken Loach, about the impact of 2019’s gig economy on the lives of a British package deliveryman, his wife and children. Fueled by the director’s signature empathy for relatable characters facing the everyday joys and trials of family life, Sorry We Missed You was a nominee for Best Film (Palme d’Or) at the Cannes Film Festival, and nominee for Outstanding British Film of the Year at the 2020 BAFTA Awards (the British Oscar).
