Beyond the Visible: Hilma af Klint (Germany/2019—directed by Halina Dyrschka)
An abstract artist before the term existed, Hilma af Klint was a visionary, inspired by modern science, spiritualism, and the riches of the natural world. In 1906 she began a series of huge, sensual works without precedent. The subject of a record-breaking retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum in 2018, af Klint was for years an all-but-forgotten figure in art history narratives until this rediscovery. Director Halina Dryschka’s eye-opening documentary describes not only Hilma’s life and craft, but also the process of her “erasure” by academics and art dealers. (93 minutes)

The Cordillera of Dreams (Chile/2019—directed by Patricio Guzmán)
The Cordillera, the surreal landscape of the Andes that runs the length of Chile’s eastern border, is at once protective, isolating and magisterial; it serves as the geographical focal point around which master filmmaker Patricio Guzmán (Nostalgia for the Light) contemplates the legacy of the 1973 military coup in his native country. Juxtaposing stunning vistas with the testimony of artists and writers exploring their conflicted feelings about the Cordillera and Chilean identity, The Cordillera of Dreams is unflinching in its presentation of recent history and possibilities for a future time. In Spanish with English subtitles.
