About the European Paintings Council

The European Paintings Council aims to cultivate greater interest in the Detroit Institute of Arts specifically through the museum’s renowned collection of European paintings. The Council offers an annual series of programs that feature our permanent collection of European paintings thereby enabling members to learn more about various aspects of this encyclopedic collection. The programming features focused gallery tours, lectures by staff and guest scholars. The Council supports one free public lecture every other year enabling us to bring a distinguished specialist of international repute to Detroit.

Travel organized by the Council serves two aims: short trips to other U.S. cities foster greater knowledge of the great collections elsewhere in this country, both public and private; trips to major international art markets that serve, in part, to cultivate private collectors and provide them with the requisite background to pursue collecting via reputable dealers or at auction.

Membership Benefits

All EPC members can attend lectures, enjoy four in-depth curator-led tours of the DIA collection, and participate at the annual meeting. Members also receive invitations to visit private collections, go on tours, and attend other exclusive EPC events.

Join/Renew Membership

Funds raised through membership in the European Paintings Council, donations received from trips, the EPC Endowment, and other fundraising activities are used primarily to frame great works of art in the collection.

The European Paintings Council is led by a Board of Directors and is advised by curators and staff in the European Art Department.

In order to be eligible for membership in the European Paintings Council, you must be a member of the Detroit Institute of Arts
