Wixom seniors create hand-painted scrolls, make new friendships during Thursdays at the Museum
Updated Sep 30, 2019
Sept. 30, 2019 (Detroit) — Thirty seniors from Wixom Senior Center visited the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) to tour the museum, make connections and create hand-painted scrolls as part of Thursdays at the Museum, a free program for adults age 55 and older.
“Thursdays at the Museum presents seniors with the opportunity to interact with others and meet new people while observing one-of-a-kind art and culture with their own eyes,” said Kailyn McMahon, senior coordinator for the City of Wixom. “The free bus transportation provided by the DIA takes a significant amount of stress out of coordinating trips to the museum for our seniors.”
As part of the special programming developed for Thursdays at the Museum, Wixom seniors participated in an art-making activity where they created scrolls and new friendships. Seniors used traditional paint brushes to design their scrolls. After the art-making activity, participants enjoyed a complimentary coffee and cookie reception and browsed the gift shop in search of unique items to bring home.
“Thursdays at the Museum is one of our most popular free programs,” said Salvador Salort-Pons, DIA director. “Seniors travel from all over Southeast Michigan to participate in free art-based activities available during Thursdays at the Museum and to connect with other seniors while experiencing art and history in ways that can’t be duplicated online, in books or on TV.”
Seniors are welcome to attend Thursdays at the Museum individually or in a group. Walk-ins are welcome and free bus transportation is available for groups of 25 or more.
Last year more than 200 senior groups scheduled visits to the museum. Seniors from Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties have free access to the DIA through the tri-county millage passed in 2012.
To schedule a group tour or field trip, contact the DIA at 313-833-7981.
