DETROIT (August 8, 2022) -- On Tuesday, September 6, notable artist and critic Kenny Schachter will present a dynamic talk at the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) entitled “Dead on Arrival, or Not? The Present State of Crypto and the Future Prospects for NFTs.” Schachter’s lecture will explore the meteoric rise of NFTs, or non-fungible tokens.

Exploding on the art market in recent years, NFTs are artworks that exist as digital files embedded with a unique code. Commanding huge prices at art auctions, NFTs are often highly sought after by collectors and investors, creating huge demand for this new form of digital art. A recent dip in their values has many questioning their long-term prospects, but Schachter will argue that the future of NFTs is bright. Schachter has been working with NFTs since their inception, curating a series of groundbreaking NFT exhibitions in Europe and the United States. A frequent contributor to New York Magazine and Artnet.com, Schachter will bring his trademark wit to a discussion of one of the most controversial developments in the art world in years, explaining, in his words, “why the nascent market for digital art will outlive the current decline and rebound in rude health, sooner than you think.”

“Kenny Schachter is a widely respected curator, scholar and critic who has much to teach us about NFTs, cryptocurrency, and the relationship between art history and economics more generally,” said Jill Shaw, Head of the DIA’s James Pearson Duffy Department of Modern and Contemporary Art and the Rebecca A. Boylan and Thomas W. Sidlik Curator of European Art, 1850-1970. “We are delighted to welcome him to the DIA for what promises to be an informative and entertaining lecture.”

Organized by the DIA’s Friends of Modern and Contemporary Art, Kenny Schachter will speak at the Detroit Institute of Arts Lecture Hall on September 6 at 6 p.m. The lecture will follow the Friends of Modern and Contemporary Art’s Annual Meeting beginning at 5:30 p.m. The lecture is free and open to all on a first come, first served basis and as space permits. RSVP here by August 26, 2022.
