Detroit Institute of Arts presents Yung Shing Le Shadow Puppet Theatre Troupe of Taiwan | “Magic of Light & Shadow from Taiwan,” three plays with Taiwanese narration and live music

October 22, 2018 (Detroit)—In a special partnership with the Michigan Chinese Women Association, the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) presents a performance by the Yung Shing Le Shadow Puppet Theatre Troupe of Taiwan on Nov. 10 at 2 p.m. The performance in the Detroit Film Theatre auditorium is free with museum admission, which is free for residents of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties.
This century-old family theater keeps traditional practices and stories alive while infusing modern techniques and original stories to stay relevant to today’s audiences. They perform “Magic of Light & Shadow from Taiwan,” three plays accompanied by Taiwanese narration and live music: "The Sandbag Trilogy,” a comedic series of entanglements with a seemingly mischievous sandbag; “The Mountain of Flames,” an excerpt from the classic 16th-Century Chinese novel “Journey to the West”; and the Japanese folktale “Momotaro,” which will be co-presented with storyteller Kanako Morishita from the Japan Outreach Initiative in Lansing, Michigan.
Following the performance, the audience will be invited backstage for a hands-on experience with the beautifully handcrafted puppets.

General admission (excludes ticketed exhibitions) is free for Wayne, Oakland and Macomb county residents and DIA members.
